BFB (Before FaceBook)

A very old friend of mine (she’s not old, she’s been friends with me, for over 14years! Just to clear that up…) had her hen over the weekend. And one of her bridesmaids mailed me to look for old pictures, silly stories, the usual.

So I had a good root through all my photos that I have here in the apartment, and I found four. FOUR!!! I thought this was a bit pathetic considering how long we’ve been friends, ok we’ve drifted over the last few years, but I honestly thought there’d be more. Which got me thinking, we are friends from a time before digital cameras, before social media, from *whispers* before the internet. Wow I feel old saying that. If you wanted photos, you either had a proper camera with film that you loaded in, or a disposable camera. And you had to get the photos processed before you could see them!

I was always the one with the camera (still am!) for nights out, birthday parties etc, so I have many embarrassing amazing photos from pre 2004. So looking through these for the hen made me realise how crap we all looked!! Or was that just me?!? Especially the early teen years!! I mean, we had no clue, zero, about how to pose, how to do our hair, what to wear even! (the late teens and early twenties were slightly better, not much, but getting there!) And I’m glad.

I’ve worked a lot of nights in clubs and bars doing events, and I would see so many girls that would spend the night taking photos of themselves & giving out that their arms/tummy/hair/legs looked weird (they didn’t) or not enjoying themselves coz they might mess their hair or make up!! Screw that! Now, so many of my photos are now made up of myself & my friends being silly. Which is far more fun. Social media is amazing for keeping up to date with whats happening in the lives of friends and family. Especially in this day & age when so many people have had to move all over the world because of the economy. I know I relied on it while I was travelling Thailand & Australia. My point is, enjoy life, and make memories, you’ll be glad you did.

Teenage screams

So, last night I got to see my teenage idols, fourteen a few years after I last saw them. These were the backstreet boys. I was a huge fan, that standard of size probably doesn’t even cover it. If twitter & Facebook & the Internet in many respects had been around then, my level of obsession may have been a bit more scary!!

Last night the venue was 90% women, felt a bit bad dragging himself along when I could have brought one of the girls, but I figured he’d be good for going to the bar & minding the spot when I would have to queue about four hours to go to the bathroom. When the boys men (and NKOTB deffo were men, men who liked to pump iron at that!) came on stage the screams were so loud I couldn’t hear anything!!! Seriously, if the energy from screams at a concert could be harnessed there would be no energy crisis!!!

I honestly still felt like a teenager, & part of me was a little disappointed when I wasn’t one of the four girls picked out of the crowd to be serenaded by the guys. Even though I prob would’ve cried my eyes out, and we all know that’s not a good look. Never mind the fact that I was standing at the back, so there was no chance for Brian, Nick, AJ or Howie to see me & fall in love with me. Coz you know that would happen.

So, my music will be updated with the songs I played repeatedly until the tape wore out. And then I bought them on cd. Kinda regretting getting rid of the CDs when I moved now…..on the computer is one thing, an actual physical cd is another…

So, a very good friend of mine recently got her first (& second) tattoo(s). She got two in one sitting, both are gorgeous and got me a little jealous. But I have three already and there are only so many places I want them on my own body.

This got me thinking, about how tattoos are no longer the taboo subject they used to be. In fact as mentioned I have three, himself has a decent sized one and wants a second, and 90% of my friends have at least one. One of my friends, Karen aka Zombie Bunny Ink, is an incredibly talented tattoo artist and sports some of the most amazing tattoos you’ll ever see!

To me, tattoos are pieces of personal art that you get to carry with you on a daily basis. They can often be tied into life changes or symbolise significant moments, I know mine are/do.

Musical memories

So, every morning I listen to “fully charged” on Spin1038 on my way to work, and they play three songs from the “noughties” (2000-2009) that bring up a lot of memories for me and all the other listeners.

And this got me thinking;
How so many songs can spark off feelings of happiness, reminders of really crappy times or just the memory of sun on your skin on that amazing holiday. I put my music on shuffle the other day & it pulled up selection that every song had a memory. Whether it was Jason Mraz that makes me think of being in a cramped bus on my way back from learning to surf in Byron Bay or Pat Benatar that always makes me think of road trips to Belfast or even (so VERY randomly) Rick Astley that always reminds me of random house parties after a long day at the Cois Fhairraige festival……

Music is a huge part of my life and who I am, and I would imagine a lot of other people. And I really hope to have many more memories from music over the years.

Zumba kicked my ass

I know I’m not alone in wanting to get into shape, but when you haven’t exercised properly in years & your former sporting attempts have been riddled with injuries it’s quite difficult to get motivated!

So myself and a friend decided to try out Zumba. Needless to say it kicked our asses. Many a time. But two batches of ten classes later and I am loving it, but tomorrow is my last class, which makes me a wee bit sad. As much as I would like to sign up for another lump of classes, I think it may be time to change it up a bit, try a boot camp, or heaven forbid *whispers* join a gym! But needless to say, I had a ball doing my Zumba, and if you’re on the northside you should definitely check out Stepping Out

The search for jeans that fit

Ok this is my first blog, so be patient with me, I’m delicate (ha!).

I’m sure there are many women, like me, who find it very difficult to find clothes that fit. Especially jeans. Jeans are the holy grail. As I’m not built like the average model, think more Christina Hendricks from Mad Men than, ooooh every fashion model out there!

So anyway, I had heard about these new jeans by Levi’s called “curve”, that were being sold as jeans for women with, ahem, curves. Thought I would give them a try. And they do the job. They are amazing. So amazing that I bought three pairs! They have allowed for hips & an ass so I didn’t have to buy a bigger size just to allow for those areas.

So a massive clear out of ill fitting jeans was done the minute I came home, and all put into bags for my local charity shop. A double win there, jeans that fit AND extra space in the wardrobe that I suppose I will just have to fill with new gorgeous clothes!!

So, spread the word!
